Traveling for women – Safety first
If you are traveling alone
Traveling alone has its advantages. You can move at your own pace, have more direct contact with foreign cultures and make new friends more easily. However, in some parts of the world, a solo female traveler may also attract unwanted attention or encounter considerable obstacles. For example, in some countries where Sharia law is strictly enforced, women may not be allowed to drive, travel alone or even go out in public without being accompanied by a male relative or group of women.
If you are traveling alone, you may want to choose countries that have a less strict attitude towards solo travelers, and where the challenges will be less. If not, it might be wise to team up with a friend. It is often safer to travel accompanied.
When traveling alone, consider the following safety measures:
