It is common to say that the value of a diploma depends on the personal value of the one who receives it, but it is not doubtful that the science of impetrants aside, certain diplomas have a value by themselves.Just cite them to immediately reflect on the one who owns all the honors due to a prestigious title.This is the case with certain scientific and literary diplomas;It is undoubtedly the same from the doctorate in law.

And yet who, among the doctors in law, justly proud of the title they carry and that they seek to impose in the midst of diplomas of all kinds, knows the distant origin and the illustrious honors which once were attached to thisgrade ?Who knows the eminent role devolved to doctors under law under the Old Regime?

For doctors in law, such a historical study responds less to a feeling of vague curiosity than a legitimate pride for a title which, more than eight centuries, is the coronation of legal studies and a grade of choice in theUniversity.
