Sarah Stern: Yes, because the garment keeps track of the first aid given to the baby, which is most often that of the mother; through the outfits she chooses for him, the way she wraps him, admires him. The psychoanalyst Donald Winnicott said that the mother's gaze was the first mirror in which the child sees himself... It seems that in the way we look at ourselves in the mirror with this or that outfit, there is a quest for this first look at us.
The "clothing addict" who testifies in our book illustrates this: she buys quantities of clothes, but each time she has the feeling that she does not have what she is really looking for... and which is, no doubt, this loving gaze of the mother. Why ? Was there a failure of this maternal love? Or something in her did not allow him to integrate it? All hypotheses are possible.
