Red Hot Chili Peppers: their new album soon to be released - Rolling Stone

The Red Hot Chili Peppers have been very productive during the pandemic. According to drummer Chad Smith, they are "nearly finished" recording their next album, the first with guitarist John Frusciante since Stadium Arcadium in 2006.

The group are said to be finalizing a new album with their longtime producer, Rick Rubin, who is also in the game. “We get along really well,” says Chad Smith, who recently appeared in a Netflix documentary about drummers, Count Me In. natural. […] We listen to each other in a new way”. Smith was careful not to reveal the album's release date, but the band plans to drop it before they kick off their US stadium tour next June.

Frusciante, who had embellished Stadium Arcadium with elaborate guitar overdubs and harmonies, seems to be in the same vein for the new album. "He's so into it," Smith says. He works so hard. We all work hard, but he is there with all his overdubs and the magic he brings. »

Frusciante returned to the group in December 2019, after ten years of absence (he had been replaced by Josh Klinghoffer). After taking two months off at the start of the pandemic, the Peppers formed a "Covid bubble" and began rehearsing with only one technician in the room. They spent months nonstop writing songs, before hitting the studio earlier this year. “We had to play in festivals which have obviously been postponed, continues Smith. So we could just write, and that's what we did. It was kind of a blessing, because we wanted to release new music, play new songs. It will be great to finally be able to tour next year, with this new record to play, and a bunch of other stuff too, of course. »

The band tries not to think about the challenge of living up to albums such as Blood Sugar Sex Magik and Californication. "You can't really think like that," Smith argues. All of our records are very good snapshots of who we are at that time. You can't say to yourself: 'I hope it will be as good as…' Otherwise, you start to have preconceived ideas about what you want to write. John hasn't been in the band for 10 years. It's been a long time. So of course it's going to sound different, but it's going to sound like the four of us, because we have this chemistry together. It's like the Red Hot Chili Peppers, but it's different and new, and to me that's awesome. […] We really like [this album] and we are proud of it. If other people like it, great. If people compare it to one album or say it doesn't sound like another, we have no control over that. But, yes, we are all very happy with this disc. »
