Le furoshiki trouve probablement son origine à l’ère Nara (Nara jidai) au VIIIe siècle. Sa plus ancienne représentation remonte à l’ère Heian (IXe au XIIe siècles) : il apparaît sous la forme d’un paquet pour transporter des vêtements sur la tête.

Furoshiki signifie littéralement « étaler (quelque chose) au bain » (風呂に敷く) : en effet durant l’ère Edo (XVIIe-XIXe siècles), le furoshiki était utilisé pour transporter ses affaires ou empaqueter les vêtements aux bains publics.
